Course Description
SPARTAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND FINANCE

Students interested in business may apply to the academy as 8th grade students. Participating students get a rigorous project-based and hands-on introduction to the skills and knowledge need for the finance career pathway, while building 21st century competencies valuable to any career.

In addition to the core high school curriculum, School of Business and Finance students study a series of finance-focused topics through a project-based learning framework. Courses include Introduction to Finance, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting and Entrepreneurship. School of Finance students also build communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills through an extensive series of real-world learning experiences. Course credit is earned through an Articulation Agreement with Georgian Court University (GCU) and will allow students to earn course credit through Georgian Court University Course Ahead Program. Students must apply to the program and achieve a grade of “C” or higher for GCU credit.

Students are required to participate in Structured Learning Experiences such as job shadowing, volunteer opportunities, school-based enterprises, and paid and unpaid internships with local businesses. Additionally students are required to be active member of DECA. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management.

PUBLIC SPEAKING  (Required Course for Spartan School of Business and Finance)

Credits: 2.5                             Grades: 9-12                                       

 

Public Speaking is a course designed to improve oral communication. Writing, reading, listening, and thinking skills are strengthened through the preparation and presentation process of speech-making. The course allows the student opportunities to engage in a variety of speaking experiences reflective of personal academic, business, and media oriented settings.  Student speeches are evaluated by their peers and the teacher as students learn to speak effectively, competently, and confidently to a group.

INTRODUCTION TO FINANCE   

(Required First Course for Spartan School of Business and Finance)

               Credits:  5                               Grades:  9-12                                  

 

3 GCU Credits for Spartan School of Finance Student with a final grade of “C” or higher

This course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of personal finance and basic skills in accounting. Familiarity with these topics will enable students to effectively interact with financial professionals throughout their lives. The course will also help students to understand and develop an appreciation for financial priorities of individuals and business entities. Additionally this course serves as a foundation course in quantitative problem solving as it applies to the business environment. This course will prepare students for postsecondary finance courses, and finance series events in DECA.

 Ocean Township High School has a dual enrollment agreement with Georgian Court University (GCU) for this course as part of their Course Ahead program. While the course is open to any student, students wishing to earn dual credit must complete all tasks that correspond to the guidelines established by GCU for academic credit. A Course Ahead application must be submitted to GCU by each student wishing to take the class for dual enrollment credit prior to taking the course.

 

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING (Required Course for Spartan School of Business and Finance)

Prerequisite: Introduction to Finance or Instructor Approval

              Credits: 5                              Grades: 10-12                                

 

3 GCU Credits for Spartan School of Business and Finance Student with a final grade of “C” or higher

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts and generally accepted accounting principles underlying the accounting cycle. Several important concepts will be studied in detail, including: the accounting cycle, accounting for assets, liabilities, and equity, understanding business information, and accounting for a sole proprietorship. MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING    

(Required Course for Spartan School of Business and Finance)  

Prerequisite: Financial Accounting or Instructor Approval

This course continues exploring the concepts learned in Financial Accounting. Accounting for corporations and partnerships, including current liabilities, payroll, bonds, stocks, and the statement of cash flow. Review managerial accounting, the need for cost accounting systems, and job order accounting and process costing and how they differ. Includes cost volume profit and breakeven analysis, presentation of budgets, performance reports and variances. This accounting course will prepare students for post-secondary accounting courses, and accounting series events in DECA. ENTREPRENEURSHIP (Required Course for Spartan School of Business and Finance)

Prerequisite: Marketing or Accounting or Prior state level competition qualifier in DECA

This course will introduce the concept of Entrepreneurship while examining the risks inherent in starting, owning, and operating a business. It will stress the importance of Entrepreneurship to our economy. Additional work will be devoted to business plans, financial plans, and management strategies. As there are many activities associated with entrepreneurial practices, original visual and oral presentations created and developed by the students individually and as members of teams will be a required part of this course.Ocean Township High School has a dual enrollment agreement with Georgian Court University (GCU) for this course as part of their Course Ahead program.
